Not out of the hardness of my heart, but one should always have enough cash on hand for a hotel stay somewhere. (You never know when your house will be unable to be occupied for a night.)

This is neither here nor there, but there's a lot of things one "should" have in life to be truly responsible: a membership to AAA, a life insurance policy, a will, a 401k and/or retirement plan, and cash for at least one night's hotel, in case of an emergency.

*I* have none of the above, and I have absolutely no doubt in my mind...I'm far from alone. Shit happens.
